That feeling of being off and anxious seems to be pretty
much gone, so I’ve re-re-restarted the weights (although I seem to have stopped
my morning walks and don’t seem to be able to get the motivation to restart
them, which needs to be sorted out!) and watched Tru Calling S1 ep4-8. Even though I can’t seem to get up the motivation for my
morning walks, I did pop to the local shops and got the Guardian, for the G2
crossword...
...and the latest Mojo magazine, for the Primal Scream article…
…which is about the reissue of ‘Give Out, But Don’t Give Up’.
I remember that when it was first released, ‘Give Out…’ got panned for being
too rock ‘n’ roll and, allegedly, getting rid of the dance music influence (someone
originated the phrase ‘dance traitors’), which looking back seems a bit disingenuous,
given that there was a funk influence on loads of tracks; that a load of tracks
were remixed by dance bands/artists; and that alongside the rock was plenty of
roll.
From the article, when Primal Scream first started on the album
they did want a rockier album and wanted it to reflect the influence of Memphis’
musical history, hence recording at Ardent Studios in Memphis, with producer Tom
Dowd and the Muscle Shoals Sound rhythm section. And they got what they wanted,
but then worried that it sounded to polished, too much like a classic rock ‘n’
roll album and got other producers, including George Drakoulias and George Clinton,
to remix it. But the original tapes with the full Tom Dowd produced album were
recently fond and will be released in a few weeks. Can’t wait.
