On Saturday my copy of Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine’s
last ever live concert (at Brixton Academy, London, 22nd November
2014) CD and DVD set, 'The Final Comedown', arrived and it’s an epic blast. All the
hits, misses, favourites, biting stage banter and reminisces of old friends no
longer here. It also feels like an epitaph to a type of indie music that doesn’t
seem to exist anymore, one that wasn’t bothered about chart positions, but one
that had a social conscience and wanted to connect with and mean something to
its audience.
And on Sunday I watched:
'Sunshine’ which has a thinnish story, a spaceship is on its way
to restart the sun, but is one of the crew trying to sabotage the mission?, but
it does a lot with it and draws out maximum tension and paranoia. It’s also a
great looking sci-fi film and you could just watch it with the volume down and
an Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works, or Orbital or the Orb album on.
…and ‘Looking Glass’, an odd film, it’s got a great cast (Nic
Cage, Robin Tunnery and Marc Blucas) and a nice story, but feels more like a TV
movie than a feature film. The story is interesting enough, a couple buy a
motel and the husband finds a two-way mirror, and I thought it might be like
Vacancy (which I really like), but it’s more of a mystery thriller, with a dash
of character study, than a horror story. It’s not a desert island movie, but I
will watch it again, the only think I disliked inn the film is that Nic Cage acts
subdued in this film and I kinda miss the over-the-top, chewing the scenery
like he hasn’t eaten in decades Nic Cage!
