Aka Friday 8th March 2019
A bit of a quiet day today, as I did the G2 Crossword:
…which goes a tad worse than yesterday’s, but is still okay,
as I only had to cheat on two thirteenths of the clues (four out of 26)…the
little grey cells are still working! And I learnt that ‘de trop’ means
excessive in French, ‘hied’ means ‘hastened’ and ‘Medoc’ is a ‘red wine from an
area of south-west France’.
Then I went into town to meet up with a friend and see
‘Captain Marvel’, which is a fun, enjoyable and entertaining Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, where Vers.is separated from her squad and is stranded on Earth, trying to stop the bad guys getting what they want. And during the course of stopping the bad guys (with help from Maria Rambeau, her best friend, and Nick Fury) she becomes Captain Marvel. 'Captain Marvel' stands alone form the other MCU films, so you can
see it without being a MCU/Marvel fan, although there are a few nods and winks to
the other MCU films.
But it follows the usual MCU formula, so there are plenty of action
and jokes and emotional beats, but I don’t think that it tweaks the formula enough
(such as 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', 'Ant-Man', 'Thor: Ragnarok' or 'Avengers: Infinity War') to feel like more than an average MCU film.
Maybe it’s just a case of not living up to the hype, and there
was a lot of hype, because there are new/unusual things in the story, for
example (and I didn’t realise this until I saw it on tweeter) there is no male
romantic lead or love interest for the Captain, the Skrull/Kree war elements
allow the story to reflect on war in general and how refugees are treated and there's how the Captain has been gaslit about certain things. But
when I think about the film, my first thought is that it’s a fine, okay MCU film,
but unlike the MCU films I mentioned above I don’t feel a need or desire to see it
again right away, I'm happy to wait for the DVD. So, a 7/10. (edit: on further thought I'm wrong and Captain Marvel does tweak the
formula, as there is no final battle between the hero and the main bad
guy, Captain Marvel scares off the Kree fleet and instead of battling it
out with Yon-Rogg (Jude Law's character) she deals with him with one
power blast and that's it. But I still feel that overall 'Captain Marvel' is an average MCU film).
…and then we had a few drinks and a lot of chat afterwards.
