Aka Monday 22nd April 2019
Bank Holiday Monday today and back in the garden with some
cool music, cool drinks and cool comics:
‘Green Lantern’ #6 – a cracking cover showing a showdown between
Adam Strange and Hal Jordan, who is no longer a Green Lantern, but a Blackstar.
The story mostly plays out how you would expect, Hal hasn’t really turned evil
and hasn’t killed Adam Strange, but we do end with the near total annihilation
of the Universe and Hal missing somewhere odd. A nice modern story using Silver
Age tropes, beautifully illustrated, which lets us get to know the protagonists/characters
a bit better, while moving the story and Hal forward. 7/10. (Grant Morrison,
writer, Liam Sharp, artist, Steve Oliff, colorist, Steve Wands, letterer,
Jessica Chen, associate editor, and Brian Cunningham, editor).
‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ #4 is a calmer issue, with no
fights, but lots of character moments and development (perfectly illustrated),
very heavy on the emotions front, and a very shocking ending. And given that this
is the reboot there’s no way of telling if it’s a misdirect or if they are
really going three. If they did go there, it would certain mark a major divergence
from the original story. 9/10. (Jordie Bellaire, writer, Dan Mora, illustrator,
Raul Angulo, colourist, Ed Dukeshire, letterer).
In ‘Witchblade’ #13 we get to see more of the future and
understand how it came to pass, all while our heroes try to survive it intact!
A fun issue, that is exquisitely illustrated, although a couple of the panels
are a little tricky to follow, with some one-liners/asides and some inventive
escaping. 8/10. (Caitlin Kittredge, writer, Roberta Ingranata, artist, Bryan Valenza
and Beyond Colorlab, colourists, Troy Peteri, letterer, and Eric Stephenson,
editor).
…and I picked up ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse’, which
I’ve heard nothing but good things about…
…and I did the G2 Crossword which got
the week off to an iffy start, as I had to cheat on a fifth if the clues
(five out of 24) and it was a real grind to cheat the other four-fifths, and I
missed out on answers I should have gotten, like I went for ‘pro’ instead of
‘for’ and ‘arrest’ instead of ‘detain’, but I did learn that ‘Bunyan’ was ‘The
Pilgrim’s Progress author, d. 1688).
