Day 803

Aka Saturday 13th April 2019

I went for a Long Walk along the Thames Delta, and walked 10.42km (or Xmiles), which took 1 hour 58 minutes and 44 seconds and 13,259 steps and burnt 1,000 calories:

…and when I got back, I did some prep for starting my new temp job, and as it’s just for four weeks, I also continued working on a new job application…

…I then finished reading ‘Comics Will Break Your Heart’ and it ends on a perfect note. ‘Comics…’ is part star crossed lovers and part coming of age tale. The “skeleton” of the story is Mir and Weldon falling in love when they shouldn’t. Weldon and Mir’s grandfathers created The TomorrowMen, a successful comic book series, but Weldon’s grandfather brought Mir’s grandfather’s rights to the The TomorrowMen for peanuts, and that caused bad blood between the families. But the story also deals with other issues, like how growing up change’s friendships, how you define yourself in your family and whether to leave home for college (and student debt) or to make do at home. ‘Comics…’ is written by Faith Erin Hicks, a top-notch comics book writer and artist and this is her first prose work and she does a marvellous job of transferring your voice from comics to novels, ‘Comics…’ is a pleasure to read. 8/10.

…and the postman brought me some of the crop of this week’s New Comic Book Day releases:

…and I did the G2 Crossword:

…which ends the week on a nose dive as I had to cheat on a third of the clues (eight out of 24). It was a real grind today, hardly any of the answers came to me easily, like I did guess ‘prawn cocktail’ for 1 across, but then I dismissed it, thinking it wasn’t a starter! Maybe the little grey cells are on strike? But I did learn that the ‘capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’ is ‘Kinshasa’ and that the ‘Alder’ tree is a ‘Birch relative’. Onwards and upwards for next week’s crosswords!
