…I reviewed, tweaked and submitted my latest job
application, read ‘Savage Dragon’ #239:
…which manages to go from adult/18-rated scenes to relationship/true
life drama to all-ages superhero punch’em-ups all with-in 22 pages. Erik Larsen
has done an impressive job over the last 26 years (of the Image series, 36 years
if you include the very first published appearance in Graphic Fantasy #1 in
1982 or roughly 46 years if you include the stories he wrote and draw as a
child!!!) of creating a superhero and world that has grown with the audience,
the series is set in real time so characters age as we age, have relationships,
get married, have kids and die. Except that they have to put up with supervillains,
alien invasions, invasions from parallel worlds and alternate timelines, the
world ending and meeting God and the Devil!
It’s weird to think that compared to mainstream superheroes,
like 'Spider-Man', 'Superman', 'Wolverine' or 'Batman', the 'Savage Dragon' world is
pretty simple and un-convoluted and there’s no secret to why this is. Mr Larsen
just creates superhero stories that are entertaining and that don’t insult your
intelligence (e.g. I can understand why 'Batman' doesn’t kill the 'Joker', and
agree with his reasoning, but it makes no sense that the legal authorities in
Gotham/America haven’t applied the death penalty, apart from the fact that the
'Joker' makes DC lots of money 😉) and don’t get involved in mega crossovers.
In a nutshell, 'Savage Dragon' is just fun.
…and I did the G2 Crossword:
…which went pretty damn well, almost as good as Thursday’s
crossword, as I only needed to cheat a twelfth of the clues (two out of 24) and
I learnt that ‘cob’ (or cobnut) is another word for ‘hazelnut’ and that
‘Ischia’ is a ‘volcanic island near Naples’, let’s see if this streak continues
with Saturday’s crossword.
