…did some more weights today, watched a little TV, listened
to James O’Brien on LBC and listened to ‘Mummers’ by The FLK, a dark tinged,
almost gothy folk album:
…which perfectly complimented my reading of ‘An Awful Imp’
and ‘Jazz Creepers’:
‘An Awful Imp’ is created by Douglas Noble and focuses on
the Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins, as he is starting out as a
Witchfinder and is intertwined with vignettes of how Mr Hopkins affected the lives
of women on the future. Mr Noble also created ‘Horrible Folk’ and ‘More Horrible Folk’, and ‘An Awful Imp’ has a similar tone, a feeling of unease and dread,
but has added humour. It’s as if the horror of ‘The Wicker Man’ was mashed-up
with the comedy of ‘The Office’. 8/10.
‘Jazz Creepers 1’ is an anthology of “florid stories, of
disreputable comics and unruly imagination”, collated by Douglas North. The stories
range from the comedic to gory to brain tinglers to 'Twilight Zone' style horror, I
will never look at a rabbit in quite the same way again, with work by Gaius Valerius Catullus, Hendrick Goltzius, Paul Jon Milne, Joseph Amesbury, Sarah Horrocks, Richard Dagley, Gareth A Hopkins, Sarah Gordon, Fats Waller, Vilim
Cerny, Helen Stratton, Luca Signorelli and Douglas Noble. How can you say no to
a line up like this?!? 8/10.
…and I did the G2 Crossword:
…and there’s a slight downturn as I have to cheat on a sixth
of the clues (four out of 24), but that’s not too bad and I learnt that ‘small
streams’ are called ‘brooks’, which I should have been able to guess, that
‘mountain lakes’ are called ‘tarns’ and that ‘German romantic songs for solo
voice’ are called ‘lieder’, although I should have gotten ‘verbose’ from
‘long-winded’.
