Day 628

Aka Saturday 20th October

…a quiet day as I binged watched the new season (season three) of 'Daredevil', which carries on pretty much straight on from the end of ‘The Defenders’. Matt is severely injured, his powers seem to be gone/out of control and he is pretty depressed. Under the care of Maggie, a nun, Matt heals both physically and mentally (well mostly, but he reminds pretty dark for most of the season and isn’t back to the old Matt till the final). During this healing Wilson Fisk gets himself released from prison and sets himself back up as the Kingpin of crime and recruits Bullseye to his side. At the same time that Matt is working outside the law to bring down the Kingpin, Karen and Foggy are trying to bring him down legally. The season ends with the Kingpin defeated and Matt, Foggy and Karen back together as a legal team to help those that need it.

The team have done a pretty damn good job of adapting the ‘Born Again’ storyline for the MCU and there’s little ‘fat’ in this season. The season looks great, both in how it was directed and shoot and the sets, costumes, etc.; the script barrels along and subtlety references the wider MCU world (without making it a barrier for those that haven’t seen the other shows), and nicely balances the darkness of the season’s storyline with enough light too stop things from getting to depressing; and the cast do a great job bringing it all to life.

There were only two points that stuck out as being “off-key” for me. Most of episode 10 (‘Karen’) focuses on Karen's past and the mistake she made that resulted in her estrangement from the rest of her family. There’s nothing wrong with these scenes, but they slow down the story and could have been covered in a coupe minutes by Karen talking/explaining to Matt or they could have spread the scenes out over the season episodes. The other point is when Wilson Fisk gives a speech to a mob protesting that he has been released from jail. Over the course of the speech the mob quieten down, lower their signs and are persuaded by the Kingpin’s speech. I could buy a few of the protestors being convinced, but not all of them and it just seemed really unbelievable. But aside from those two instances I really enjoyed this season, its action packed (although there’s no hand so the kung-fu fighting is pretty dialled down) and emotion packed. 8/10.

…it’s also been reported that both ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’ have been cancelled, hopefully it’s just to make way for a ‘Heroes For Hire’ series (‘Heroes For Hire’ was the comic book series that teamed up Luke Cage and Danny Rand/Iron Fist) or a ‘Daughters Of The Dragon' series (focusing on Misty Knight and Colleen Wing). But, it might be because Disney own Marvel and Disney is developing its own streaming service and therefore wants all Marvel related stuff on it and not it’s competition (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, etc.) ...

…and I did the G2 crossword:

…which brought the crossword week to a close with a slight upswing as I only needed to cheat on a fifth of the clues, six out of 25, and I learnt that a ‘dace’ is a small river fish (although I’m not sure if that means that it is a small fish that lives in rivers or an ordinary sized fish that lives in small rivers!).
