I got some great music through the post today as my Piccadilly
Records order arrived:
the only problem is having to rip
the vinyl to mp3, luckily, the BP Fallon and David Holmes single has a download
code.
Quick Reviews:
BP Fallon and David Holmes –
Henry McCullough – is a great song celebrating a friendship and life well
lived. The Andrew Weatherall mix ramps up the mellow dubbish of the original
and adds a bit of Two Lone Swordsmen electronics.
Out Of The Blue, Complied by Phil
Mison – a great selection of Balearic/ambienty tunes and is great on a sunny
day.
To Rack & Ruin Vol. 14 – I haven’t
listened to this yet as I haven’t ripped it, but if it has the same quality as
previous releases it’ll be great.
On the job hunt, I got another rejection/”we’re proceeding
without you” email and I haven’t seen many that a can do, let alone ones that I
feel excited about. Hopefully things on the job front will get better soon.
The Wild Geese is very much of its time, so while some of
the story beats may have been unique at the time (e.g. the father/son relationship),
but are now a bit ‘hack work’ and the portrayal of race and sexual preference
is broad (maybe even offensive), but it is a great romp. Very Boy’s Own
Adventures. You could describe it as a Garth Ennis story, but without the emotional
intelligence of Mr Ennis’ best work.
Dead Presidents is a great film. I had thought it was just
about a heist, but there’s so much more and the heist is a small part of the story
(except that the heist is a natural consequence of the story). It reminded me
of Goodfellas, where you follow Henry Hill grow from childhood to manhood. Here
you see Anthony Curtis grow up through some big history (such as Vietnam, drugs
and the Black Panthers) and how they shape him.
I also brought a few of Lego's BrickHeadz to make. I’m finding Lego
very relaxing, almost therapeutic. It must be that you start with a bunch of unconnected
bricks (i.e. chaos) and after following instructions, you end with a completed
thing (i.e. order). Although it’s also great/relaxing to build random stuff.
Expect pictures to follow!
