Today was a lazy day, still feeling under the weather, so I did the G2 crossword, potted about
and watched the TV adaptions of Agatha Christies’ And
Then There Were None and Agatha Christies’ Witness For The Prosecution.
And Then There Were None is a great adaption, it has a great
cast, great setting (the island looks really desolate and intimidating and the
house looks outstanding) and the technical aspects (like wardrobe, hair, make
up, etc.) are great. However, this is an adaption of the book and therefore is
very dark and unlike the film versions, there aren’t any sympathetic characters
(while some are likely, they have all done something horrible and nasty) and never like a happy ending.
Like And Then There… Witness For The Prosecution has a great
cast and looks great, but it probably has an even darker story and its never
clear who you should be rooting for (until the denouement). In a nutshell a society
woman is killed and her beau is blamed, Toby Jones is sure the beau is innocent
and works to save him. There are twists and a really dark ending, which
reminded me of Natural Born Killers, with the killer (or killers) says they did
it because they could and wanted the money. There’s also an undercurrent of WWI
and the effect it had on those involved or caught up in the conflict.
