Aka Monday 31st December 2018
For the last few years I've opted for a quiet New Year's Eve, there's to much expectation to have a fun and it costs to much, so you end up having less fun. So today I watched:
‘Ghostbusters II’, because the climax of the film happens on
New Year’s Eve, isn’t a bad film and it’s nice to catch up with the guys, but it
has less of the grittiness and freshness of the first film. 6/10.
‘Where Eagles Dare’, because it’s a great film and I’ve recently
read ‘Broadsword Calling Danny Boy’, just a great romp of a film, full of twists
and explosions and impossible gun fights, that makes no sense when you think
about it, but it carries you through on sheer chutzpah. 8/10., and
'Fight Club’, which I
always watch on New Year’s Eve, as my palette cleanser for the start of the new
year. It’s weird to think about how my appreciation of ‘Fight Club’ has changed
over the years. I first saw in my early twenties and I loved all the flash and spectacle
and thought that Tyler and his philosophy was great, but then a few years later,
and after reading the book, I’d charged
my mind and realised that Tyler is the bad guy, a cult leader with a stunted
philosophy, that can be used to excuse terrible behaviour, and now I’ve half
way between both views. That the self-realisation message of Tyler is useful,
but it’s not an endpoint in itself and like the Narrator/Ed Norton’s character
you need to find a middle ground and not to close yourself off.
…I also submitted an application for a post with Basildon
and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust…fingers crossed!
…and I did the G2 Crossword:
…and we get week off to an okayish start, as I get an
Illuminati score of cheating on five of the 23 clues. Partly because I just
didn’t know the answer, like ‘casket’ for ‘jewel box’ or ‘Hinds’ for ‘Deer’, or
I just went down a slightly different, but wrong, route, like going for
‘enlight’ instead of ‘enliven’.
