Still felt a little under the weather, plus I’ve still got a
bit of toothache, although it moves from tooth to tooth, so I had a lazy day at
home and watched ‘Stewart Lee: Content Provider’ on the BBC’s iPlayer:
For me, Stewart Lee is one of the best comics working today
and ‘Stewart Lee: Content Provider’ finds him in tip-top form. From familiar riffs
(like a band playing its greatest hits, you don’t expect The Rolling Stones to
not play ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘Brown Sugar’, etc.)such as mocking the audience
for not getting his jokes, because his audience “…have brought their friends…”,
who prefer mainstream comics; mocking the audience for agreeing with him, “…was
he funny, no but I agreed the fuck out of it…; railing against the character of
‘Stewart Lee’ that he has too play; and explaining how his jokes work.
To brand new material, the stage floor is made up of other
comedian’s live DVDs; repeating the format of the first half’s first five – ten
minutes in the start of the second half, the first half focusing on Brexit and the
second Trump; noting that he hasn’t written jokes about Brexit because it changes
from day to day and he needs material that he can use for all 16 months of the show’s
run because he “…didn’t want to commit to a course of action for which there is
no logical or finical justification…” and several other allegories for Brexit;
although he does talk directly about Brexit, noting that “…it wasn’t just
racists that voted to leave Europe…it’s was cunts also…”, which seem to have
annoyed some Leavers and a great ten minutes (or so) on Game of Thrones aka “Peter
Stringfellow’s Lords of the rings”.
It’s a great two hours of comedy about current events, the digital
world making everything available on demand, about comedy and about “…Brexit
divided Britain…” and well worth watching and re-watching.
And I did the G2 crossword:
