A large part of today was spent dealing with our new washing
machine, which came, was installed and working by 10am and by 11am it stopped
working…FFS…so too much of my morning and afternoon was spent on the phone to Currys
PC World and Samsung and waiting for people to come round, which they did by
3pm. And by 3.30pm we’d found out that it wasn’t an installation issue, so a
Samsung engineer was booked for Thursday.
All of which put me in an odd aggressive mood, which I think
contributed to me/allowed me to spend too much time procrastinating about my
job hunting but have made my mind up that I will do it tomorrow…or will I!!!
While waiting I did read Alex de Campi and Victor Santos’s glorious
‘Bad Girls’, a noirish tale of deceit, 6 million dollars, hope, love and the overthrowing
of Batista by the 26th of July Movement, led by Castro. Both the art and the design
of ‘Bad Girls’ is top notch, the book looks like a classic hard-boiled novel,
has a hefty weight and firm pages.
The design and artwork are matched by the story
and the writing, while the noir standard characters are present and correct, they
are not written as stereotypes, but as believable individuals. I had expected ‘Bad
Girls’ to be a kinda Oceans 11, light-hearted caper story, set in 1950’s Cuba,
but it’s not, it’s a lot darker and more human, that leaves you wanting more,
to know what happens next in these characters lives. 10/10.
Also, the postman delivered my copy of UNKLE’s ‘Ape Shall Never Kill Ape’ single, which is a great track, chock full of samples from the
original Planet Of The Apes films, with sprinklings of scratching and beats.
10/10.
UNKLE had a lot of potential, it involved a lot of great musicians, they
were a shed load of great ideas behind it and great design & artwork, but
it’s never seemed to fully live up to that potential, but tracks like ‘Ape
Shall Never Kill Ape’, ‘Be There’, the live 1999 Breezeblock set (aka ‘UNKLE vs Scratch Perverts’), many UNKLE remixes, the ‘sexy Beast’ and a few more 100%
justify UNKLE. Actually, I may be along about UNKLE not living up to the
potential, mmm…
…and I did the G2 crossword:
