Aka Monday 10th September
Today I did:
…the G2 crossword:
…listened to some more ‘The Thing Minute’ podcasts…
…did a little job hunting, identified a few possibilities,
now I just need to follow them up and apply!!!, and
…watched ‘Black Hawk Down’, a nice action film that doesn’t
over-do the jingoistic ‘U! S! A! U! S! A!’ness that some war films do. There’s
plenty of great actors, actin scenes and drama, but there’s practically no
attempt to humanise the Somalis. I know that in the film they are the enemy,
but when the good guys are mostly (maybe entirely?) white, with bits and pieces
of backstory to humanise them, and the bad guys are all black, with hardly any/no
backstory, one does feel a little uneasy, feel that the film is unconsciously feeding
into an age-old stereotype of the animalistic, unfeeling and savage black man. That’s
also leaving aside how historically accurate it is, is it close to truth or has
it been 'Bravehearted'? But, aside from those two points, 'Black Hawk Down' is a
good action film. 7/10.
