Aka Monday 28th February - Sunday 6th March 2022
Another quietish week, a bit of working, a bit of chilling and a bit of venturing out for a few drinks (for the first time in a long time). On the Sunday I went for a Medium Walk:
…I did 5.11km in 59 minutes 35 seconds, which burnt 490 calories. The only other things of note this week were getting a couple of albums:
…’Fuji Rocks’ is a collection of live tracks from the ’98 Fuji Rock Festival, which I found out about because it’s got a live version of ‘Kool Roc Bass’ by the Lo-Fidelity Allstars, and it became a clincher to get when I saw it also had live versions of ‘Burning Wheel’ by Primal Scream, ‘Breathe’ by The Prodigy, Iggy Pop doing ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’, ‘Sunshine’ by Ian Brown, and ‘Dub Mentality’ by Asian Dub Foundation (although I haven’t had a chance to listen to the album yet)…
…and ‘Home Volume One’ which is a collection of chilled house/electronic songs interspersed with field recordings of birdsong, toads, woods, and other natural environments and inhabitants. Perfect for chilled out and relaxing too…I also picked up a bunch of New Comic Book Day gems:
…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:
…and Monday’s crossword gets the eek off to a rocky start, as we had to cheat on over a fifth of the clues (four out of 18). We were feeling a little hungover from the weekend and I guess that the little grey cells were just feeling out of sync. But we did learn that ‘Regency’ is a ‘style of 19th-century English architecture, interior design and furniture’ and that ‘efficacious’ means to be ‘able to produce the result intended’…
…things pick up with Tuesday’s grid, we only had to cheat on a tenth of the clues (two out of 19). The little grey cells are back online and steamed through the clues like a plough through snow. We did learn that a ‘camisole’ is a ‘woman’s loose-fitting undergarment’ and ‘stew’ can mean a ‘state of great agitation’, as well as simmering agitation…
…the steaming continues with Wednesday’s grid, with only have to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 24). The little grey cells were feeling a bit down in after a full day in the office, but they still get their heads above water and we only tripped up when we forgot that ‘foul’ means ‘disgusting’ and ‘frightful’ means ‘terrible’, but we did learn that ‘superfluity’ also means ‘plethora’…
…things pick up more with Thursday’s grid, we only had to cheat on a twelfth of the clues (two out of 23). The little grey cells are kinda back to their nimble best, but we are being a little forgetful, like we forgot that ‘anarchy’ is a form of ‘lawlessness’. We also got our left and right mixed up for a good chuck of the afternoon…even when pointing out directions with my hands I still said right when I meant left and was using my left hand to point left! Maybe it’s brain fog (or is it brian fog??!?! 😊)! On the bright side we did learn that ‘verdure’ means ‘greenery’…
…Friday’s grid went super as well, we only had to cheat on a thirteenth of the clues (two out of 25). I think the joy of the weekend and relaxing and chilling powered the little grey cells on. Although it’s a tad embarrassing that we didn’t get ‘citron’ from ‘fruit resembling a large lemon’. It’s like how obvious is it!! But we did learn that a ‘bower’ is a ‘leafy recess’…
…Saturday’s grid ends the week on an okay note, as we only had to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 24). The grid was a little chewy and at the start we thought it was going to be a bit or a rout, but the little grey cells managed to turn it around. And we learnt that ‘hunger-mugger’ means ‘disorderly – clandestine’, that a ‘pine cone’ is a ‘rounded woody tree fruit’ and that a ‘leather strip’ is called a ‘thong’…which slightly changes Sisqo’s Thong Song…
