Aka Monday 15th March - Sunday 21st March 2021
I’m back catching up with this blog, so this’ll be another brief one…worked from home this week and had a couple of days off, mostly for my Birthday, …got a little Portishead haul (lately I’ve been getting back into them and trip-hop more widely) and artwork for my Birthday (and some cash money):
but also just to just rest and recharge, during which I got this month’s Mojo and Uncut magazines:
…Mojo’s cover CD was okay, a bit meh, a bit underwhelming, especially as the musicians/bands featured in the magazine weren’t my faves, but Uncut’s Ambient Americana is an awesome CD. For once Uncut have trounced Mojo in the cover CD stacks! Plus, there’s a great feature on Ambient Americana, highlighting loads of bands and records to dig into, and a big feature on The Velvet Underground. So, if this was two months ago, I’d be strongly recommending that you pick it up as soon as possible! And I got this month’s Lego Batman magazine, with a free Robin figure:
…and the postman delivered this month’s Kyle Starks Stickers Club stickers:
…and my Pull List (that’s a lot of comics to get through!):
…I also went for a Long Walk:
…after which I had my first Covid jab and then I read ‘Spill Zone’ (the Free Comic Book Day prequel and Volumes 1 and 2):
…a fun and engrossing, beautifully illustrated story about alien invasions, life being turned upside down and family ties and responsibilities and doing the right thing. And I read ‘Empowered’ Vol. 11:
…probably the darkest chapter in Emp’s story, as she has to battle friends and colleagues across the city. And strangely, for such a dark story, it’s also uplifting, as Emp makes the hard decisions by doing the right thing, and illuminating as we got lots of backstory. It’s going to be very interesting to see where Vol. 12, and beyond, goes…
…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:
…and Monday’s crossword gets the week off to a niffy start, as we only had to cheat on a ninth of the clues (three out of 26). The little grey cells were laser-focused, mostly, getting the answers out of the clues like no-one’s business, although we should have gotten the three we missed…
…Tuesday’s crossword continues the good news, the little grey cells continue to knock it out of the park (like we didn’t know that ‘Gaudi’ was a ‘Spanish architect, greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism, d.1926’, but we had the intersecting letters and a and d seemed the only letters to reasonably fill the gap!) and we only had to cheat on a twelfth of the clues (two out of 24) and we learnt that a ‘chignon’ is a ‘knot of hair arranged at the back of the head’…
…things continue smoothly with Wednesday’s crossword, again we had to cheat on a twelfth of the clues (two out of 24), although we should have gotten ‘risible’ from ‘ludicrous’, but we did learn that ‘prodigal’ can mean ‘spendthrift’…
…things take a tumble with Thursday’s crossword, we had to cheat on a quarter of the clues (five out of 21). I think the little grey cells were a little burnt out, as a couple of them we should have gotten, like ‘abut’ from ‘border’ or ‘deeply’ from ‘to an intense degree’, some we forgot, like ‘bhaji’ from Indian snack of vegetables in batter’, but we did learn that Ngaio Marsh is a New Zealand crime writer…
…things return to normal with Fridays’ crossword, we only had to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 24), and the three we didn’t get we should have, how didn’t we get ‘opposite’ from ‘contrary’ on ‘Pitt’ from ‘one of two British prime ministers’, especially after all that Blackadder the Third watching!!!...
…and Saturday’s crossword ends the week on a solid note, as we only had to cheat on a seventh of the clues (three out of 21). It took a while for the little grey cells to warm up, but once they did, there was no hope for the grid, except for the three we didn’t get! At least we now know that a ‘predator’ can be a ‘marauder’ and that ‘herald’ can mean ‘signal’…
