Days 2127 - 2133

Aka Monday 14th September - Sunday 20th September 2020

A very quiet week this week, just keeping my head down (which is handy as I’m about a month and a half behind in updating this!)…I went for a Long Walk:

...picked up my New Comic Book Day beauties:

…and brought the new Chuck Palahniuk book ‘The Invention Of Sound’ and the latest DJ Magazine (mostly for the Unabombers interview):

…and read ‘Caballistics, Inc. Vol. 1’:

…which is a really fun read about a team of monster hunters (my only bug bear is the Tottenham Court Tube Station is nothing like the real one, or was before the rebuild, but that’s a tiny compliant), mixing elements of X-Files, Buffy and Supernatural into a UK pot. The individual stories work well, with plenty of scares and humour, all while developing the Team members and the overarching story of who is the man behind the scenes.

…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:

…and the week gets off to a great start with Monday’s crossword. We only had to cheat on a twelfth of the clues (two out of 23). I think the little grey cells were pretty much on fire and with a little more hard thinking I think we would have gotten ‘staidest’ from ‘most stuffy’ and ‘glad rags’ from ‘dressy clothing’, especially given how much we’ve watched The Office (which had a cover of ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ as its theme and then there’s the Stereophonics version, which seemed to be everywhere in the early ‘00’s)…

…Tuesday’s crossword takes a little stumble, as we had to cheat on a fifth of the clues (five out of 25). I guess the late Summer heat has frazzled the little grey cells, ‘cos we should have gotten ‘cosy’ from ‘teapot cover’ and ‘irate’ from ‘mad’ or ‘sympathy’ from ‘fellow-feeling’. I guess heat is the little grey cells kryptonite 😊

…and Wednesday’s crossword goes perfectly with no need to cheat on any of the 21 clues. The little grey cells strode through the clues, like the cock-of-the-walk, leaving answers in their dust…

…Thursday’s crossword didn’t go quite as perfectly, we had to cheat on a sixth of the clues (four out of 24). I guess that the little grey cells were a little burnt out from yesterday, most of the answers were pretty straight forward, but those four just stumped us. Like with ‘make one’ we got stuck thinking about it meaning creating and not joining together, so we didn’t get ‘unify’. And we re-learnt that ‘zephyr’ means ‘breeze’…

…Friday’s crossword went pretty badly, at one point we thought we were only going to get a handful of the answers, that we would have to cheat on the majority of the clues, but in the end we managed to only have to cheat on a third of the clues (seven out of 18). It was like we had a complete blindspot for the answers, that we couldn’t think of synonyms or work out the logic of the clues. Hopefully it’s just a hiccup. Least said, soonest mended, I think…

…which seems to have worked as on Saturday’s crossword we only had to cheat on a nineteenth of the clues (one out of 19). Or maybe it was a simpler grid? Either way, the only clue we couldn’t get was ‘on the dot’, we got ‘precisXXX’, but for some reason couldn’t make it to ‘precisely’, which seems really odd, but hey ho, it’s done, it’s dusted and the rest of the grid went fine…
