Days 917 - 925

Aka Monday 5th August 2019 - Sunday 11th August 2019

A quiet week this week, mostly just working and resting from work, except for:

receiving some gems in the post, my copy of ‘The Secret Barrister – Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken’, which has gotten some very good write-ups, my RHLSTP (Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast) Fan Club pack arrived, a nice little bonus for supporting one of the best podcasts out there (if you haven’t heard or watched any of the RHLSTP’s you have missed out on some great interviews and laughs) and my copy of 'Bad Machinery' Book 8 arrived, an excellent comic from the national gem that is John Allison (this collects the eight Bad Machinery story, which was originally published online here and is thoroughly enjoyable and recommended):

picking up this week’s new comic book releases (choc-a-bloc with good reading):

and I brought the latest issue of Long Live Vinyl, mostly for the feature on the 25th Anniversary of the release of ‘Definitely Maybe’, a classic rock ‘n’ roll album that still sounds as good today as it did back in 1994:

and some Lego magazines, from which I'm thinking of merging Obi-Wan with Wu, to kinda honour the roots of ‘Star Wars’ and its debt to ‘The Hidden Fortress’ and I built a B-Wing:

and working on this week’s G2 Crosswords:

…Monday’s crossword got the week off to a great start as I only had to cheat on a twelfth of the clues (two out of 24). The little grey cells were firing on pretty much full cylinders, although they/I should really have gotten ‘nation’ from ‘state’ and ‘pimpernel’ from ‘small plant with creeping stems, sometimes scarlet’ or at least the ‘…sometimes scarlet’ part…

…the little grey cells took a tumble with Tuesday’s crossword as I had to cheat on a quarter of the clues (five out of 21). I knew most of the answers – ‘quartermaster’, ‘elan’, ‘darning needle’ and ‘unloosen’ – I just couldn’t connect them up, especially as I mis-read mender as meander! But I did learn that a ‘filbert’ is a hazelnut (or a hazelnut tree)…

…and the downturn continued with Wednesday’s crossword as I had to cheat on five of the 23 clues, but it did give me an Illuminati score, so swings…again I should have gotten most of those five, but I think a lack of sleep is getting to the little grey cells, making it harder to make leaps and connections from the clues…but I did learn that Royal Portrush is a gold club…

…and the downturn continued to continue with Thursday’s crossword, as I needed to cheat on a quarter of the clues (five out of 21). Again the little grey cells were a tad too tired to make the connection to what should have been obvious answers, but I did learn that ‘halloumi’ is a ‘traditional Cypriot cheese’ and that ‘Coypu’ is the ‘(fur of) a South American rodent’…

…and the “quarter curse” continued with Friday’s crossword, as I had to cheat on six of the 23 clues. Some of the six I should have gotten, like ‘skint’ from ‘broke’, but I did learn that a ‘dumpling’ is a ‘ball of dough’, that a ‘zither’ is a ‘metal-stringed soundbox’, that an ‘etching’ is a ‘deep print’ and that the ‘hornpipe’ is a ‘lively jig’…

…the little grey cells were still a little sleep deprived for Saturday’s crossword, but I only had to cheat on a sixth of the clues (four out of 23). Even though I should have gotten three of those four, my lack of geography knowledge meant that I wouldn’t have gotten ‘Libyan’ from ‘From Benghazi?’, but I know now. Hope with a little bit of good sleep I’ll be back on track for next week’s crosswords!
