Aka Sunday 10th February 2019
Went for a morning constitutional, aka my long walk to get
the newspaper, and managed to walk 10.07km (6.26 miles), in 1 hour 49 minutes
and 19 seconds, which burnt through 1,100 calories and took 12,471 steps…
…and read:
‘Green Lantern’ #1, #2, #3 and #4, initially I wasn’t going
to read this new iteration of ‘Green Lantern’, even though it is written by one
of my favourite writers, Grant Morrison, as I’ve got no interest in Hal
Jordan/Green Lantern, but I had some spare money and decided to dip my toe into
the waters…and it’s been a bit meh. Which is odd as the ideas I the stories are
big and epic and weird (aka typical Morrison) and the art is great, but I don’t
feel drawn into the stories, I don’t feel like I’m engaged in the story, that
I’m experiencing it as it happens. It’s like I’m reading a summary of what
happened rather than seeing it happen (even though we are seeing events
happen), maybe it’s because I know it’s a mainstream DC book and in
six/nine/12/24 months’ time these stories will be retconned or ignored? 8/10
for the ideas and art, but 6/10 for the actual books.
‘Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt’ #1 is a vey interesting
introduction to a character I know better as the basis for ‘Ozymandias’ from
‘Watchmen’ and Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard do a great job in setting out
who Peter Cannon is, his world and friends/colleagues and with plenty of
action, while also playing with this ‘Watchmen’ link. 8/10.
‘Rick and Morty’ #46, I never know what to say about the
‘Rick and Morty’ comics, they do a great job of keeping the tone and humour of
the TV show (and this issue’s two stories do a great job of capturing the
viciousness of Rick and the tension between him and Morty). But they do feel a
tad short, like they are a bite-size version of the show, so you still feel a
tad hungry when you finish a single issue. 7/10
