Aka Sunday 30th September
… still doing a touch of procrastinating and watched the
rest of Season 10 of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, I had stopped watching the series because it
had gotten a bit boring/obvious and a tad nasty towards ‘geek’ culture, but now
I’m being sucked in (maybe it’s because the episodes are so short that you can
watch half a season without realising it?)…
…then I started working on the first if the three job
applications, reading through the job description, thinking about what examples
I could use for each competency and job specification…
…then I read these comics:
'Stumptown' is a great detective/private eye series, but in ‘StumptownVol. 3: The Case Of The King Of Clubs’ Greg Ruka, Justin Greenwood and Ryan
Hill take us in a slightly different direction. Instead of being hired for a
case, Dex Parios finds a friend, Mercury, beaten and left for dead and she goes
on the hunt for the person/persons responsible. And the story focuses much more
on Dex her history and how it has shaped her, than on the criminal aspects.
Maybe that’s because the crime is closer to home and therefore more emotional to
Dex, so the “joining the dots” of most crime stories isn’t the focus here (although
that’s not to say that there isn’t any investigating going). The crime is
solved it turns out that the police had things pretty much in hand, although
there is a coda which ties the reason for the beating into the earlier Stumptown
stories. The team have done a great job with this story and although the new
art style (Justin Greenwood replaces Matthew Southworth as the artist) is
slightly more angular than before, you soon forget this as you’re galloping
through the pages to find out who the baddie is and what Dex is going to do to
them. 8/10.
‘Rick and Morty’ #42 –The Rick Revenge Squad (by Kyle Starks, Marc Ellerby, Sarah Stern and Crank!) get their comeuppance
as the family, even Jerry, take them down and we get a visit from an old friend.
While in the second story (by Tini Howard, Jarrett Williams, Sarah Stern and Crank!), Rick and Morty get deeper into the world of the Public
Domain!!! Fun, fun, fun. Perfectly captures the feel of the TV show. 8/10.
In ‘Witchblade’ #8, Alex continues to investigate the
reappearance of Johnny, who is meant to be dead, and we see a little further
into the forces trying to take the Witchblade from Alex. We also get to see
Alex being more confident in her new world and using the Witchblade. Caitlin
Kitteredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza and Troy Peteri are doing a great
job of updating ‘Witchblade’, grounding the fantasy elements, the Witchblade,
demons, conspiracies, etc., in a real world of emotions, PTSD, etc. 7/10.
In ‘The Wicked and The Divine 1373A.D.’ Kieron Gillen, Ryan
Kelly, Matthew Wilson and Clayton Cowles tell the story of Ananke confessing
all to the Lucifer of 1373 A.D., who has lived past her two years as a god and has
become a nun. Safe to say that things don’t end well. We learn a little more about
what the Pantheon does and how the ‘ritual’ works. 7/10.
