Enjoyed the Easter Bank Holiday.
Brought some music:
...and listened to some more music:
- I got AFTC’s ‘One Phat Deeva’ because the only copy I have is on an old mini-disc and wanted it on some more accessible! It’s a great track, a mash-up of Fatboy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’ and Adeva’s ‘In And Out Of My Life’, coming out at the (first?) creative height of the bootleg/mash-up scene.
- Daniel Avery’s ‘Song For Alpha’ is a great techno album LP and reminds me of earlyish Aphex Twin/Warp Records, when they were doing a more “home listening” techno sound. On three different occasions I've gone into a record shop, really liked what they were playing in the shop, only to find out it was 'Songs For Alpha'.
- Aside from ‘A Man of Constant Sorrow’ I didn’t think much of the ‘Oh Brother, Where Art Thou’ soundtrack.
- The Powder EP was ok, but has a great cover of ‘Memo For Turner’, making it more menacing and sultry.
- ‘Tago Mago’ by Can was ok, and I’ll give it another try, but it didn’t hook me or explain why loads of people hold them in high esteem.
- All New Accelerators were around when I started University and were kinda part of the New Wave Of New Wave scene (or at least their record label was) and this 12 inch has some ok punky songs and a great, dragged out, smacked out cover of ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid’.
- V/VM as Mrs Mill’s ‘Between Nothingness & Eternity’ didn’t sound anything lime I expected it too, I thought it was going to be harsh and glitchy or ambienty and dark, but it almost classical, lots of beautiful and delicate (sometimes not so delicate) piano and ambience.
- Which wasn’t the case with the Slipknot Best Of, which is heavy musically and lyrically. The NME CD with it is there because it has a great live version of Slipknot’s ‘Wait and Bleed’, which, to my ears, is better than the studio version.
- The ‘Moments In Time’ compilation has some great songs on it covering the Balearic/House sound and is well worth getting.
- Faith No More’s ‘Angel Dust’ is a great album which everyone some have, it’s dark and heavy, but accessible and while the reissue has some nice live tracks it doesn’t really add to or expand ‘Angel Dust’.
I also brought some DVDs:
- ‘This Gun For Hire’ is a great noir thriller, about a hired killer (the gun for hire) who is seeking revenge on a client who betrayed him.
- ‘The Best of Dave Allen’, which I haven’t watched yet, but one of my fondest childhood memories is of being allowed to stay up to watch Dave Allen on TV. Objectively, he didn’t do much, just sat in his car, drinking and chatting, but he was such a great storyteller that he draw you in and all of a sudden half an hour had wheezed by.
- ‘Legion’ Season 1, perhaps the weirdest X-Men live action show (or film) ever, it seems to be a pretty simple story, but it does a great job showing how mental health and super powers can make some simple very complicated/confusing.
- I can remember when ‘Falling Down’ first came out and all the controversy it caused, but now it looks pretty tame, in terms of the violence, and the story seems to be more to the fro, emphasising the loneliness and the dangerousness of William Foster/D Fens.
- ‘Excalibur’ is a fun telling of the Arthurian legend and is worth watching for (a) Nicol Williamson as Merlin and (b) spotting all the supporting actors who went on to “bigger things”, such as Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne.
- 'Blade of the Immortal', which I haven’t seen yet, but it looks like it’ll be a great film.
- And ‘The Last Jedi’, which I still can’t decide whether or not I like, for every great scene there’s a not so good scene or a reason why that scene shouldn’t work/is against cannon. But, still love the scene where the two ships crash, as others have said, it’s almost like a manga scene, the way there’s no sound then there is sound, etc.
Brought some comics on NCBD and
Goro #5 arrived:
Saw this great John Carpenter tribute on Tweeter, where his talents
and films are displayed logarithmically (i.e. on a section of a log), although
I forgot to note who made it (sorry!).
Brought some new Chuck T’s as my old ones had worn out and
were letting in water (although I'm sure that they used to last longer, maybe that changed when Nike brought them?!? ;) ):
And I did the G2 crossword:
