Day 218

Today was a quiet day, I did the crossword:

…and potted about a bit and watched series four of Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, which is really funny (I had meant to just watch the Rod Liddle sketch, but ended up watching all the episodes and the extras!).

One of my favourite bits of comedy is when in the middle of pretending to be Rod Liddle eating a poppadum, which has taken a good few minutes, Stewart Lee stops and tells an audience member, who has been checking his watch, that whenever he (the audience member) checks his watch, he (Stewart Lee) starts the eating over again. It doesn’t sound funny written down, but the way Stewart Lee does it live is really funny.

There are, as part of the DVD extras, a pair of live recordings of ‘work in progress’ stand-up shows and it’s interesting to hear Lee work a live audience (that’s paid to see him) and to develop his routines. You can see that Stewart Lee is at the top of his game and in complete control and it’s a pity that the BBC wouldn’t commission further series, but at least we have four practically perfect series.
