Lots of New Comic Book Days and one Free Comic Book Day
since my last post:
Finally got round to getting a copy of the 'Escape From New York' novel, as a little treat to myself. The novel of 'The Thing' had extra scenes and a different ending (as it was based on an earlier script and not the final script) and really added to the film, it was like having lots of extra deleted or extended scenes, so I'm looking forward to see how the 'Escape...' novel adds to the 'Escape...' film.
Also, caught up with Island:
Also, caught up with Island:
Sad to see Island finish, it introduced me to lots of new
writes, artists and writer artists, who I would never have never have read
(either because I couldn’t afford their books or I wouldn’t have been exposed
to their books) if they hadn’t been curated in Island. Hopefully this
mainstream expose has increased their audience and will help them to produce
more work.
Saw the 24: Legacy finale and was mostly happy with the
season, keeping it to just twelve episodes definitely helped keep the story
(relatively) lean and there weren’t many times when you felt that the story was
treading water to make up the running time. Although, there were still plenty
of characters making stupid/odd decisions which helped to keep the story moving
along 😊
Talking of stupid/odd decisions The PM has called a snap election
(after confirming at least six times over the last nine months or so that she
wouldn’t) and it’s already gotten boring as heck, with two main themes – ‘strong
and stable’ and ‘Corby is a terrorist sympathiser’, hooray for right wing press
(which makes up about 80% of the national press).
There’s also been a bank holiday, which is kinda pointless
for me while I’m unemployed as I don’t the benefit of time-off! Although I
still don’t seem to have that much spare time either, For example, I’ve brought
a few DVDs which I hadn’t had a chance to watch yet, but am looking forward to
watching:
But I have had time to listen to the new Moon Duo LP, Occult
Architecture Vol. 2, which is very much the Yang to Occult Architecture Vol. 1’s
Yin. Vol. 2 has some really nice chilled out, almost Balearic-like songs. The
new Kasabian LP, “For Crying Out Loud (2017)”, which is good, but for me lacks
the quarks/experimental nature of their earlier work, so for me the LP never
really takes off (although this might change with further listens).
I’ve also got the reissue of Leftfield’s Leftfield, a couple
of R.E.M. best-of’s (I couldn’t find just one that had all the tracks I wanted,
hence the multiple best-of’s) and a Pixies best-of, which I haven’t had time to
listen to fully, just a couple of tracks here and there.
I did have time to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, which
is as good as the first film, but it did seem to have too much 3D/SFX, there
were several times when I had to take off my 3D glasses and look away from the screen
to give my eyes a rest!!!
I did have time to notice that I’ve put on more weight and
need to do something about it, so I’ve started a diet (kinda, it’s more about
cutting down on crisps and chocolate, rather than eating more veggies) and exercising
more (free weights, walking and biking). I’ve even downloaded an app to track
how much (and where) I work. Getting the morning paper burns off calories equivalent
to half a kit-kat finger, happy days!
And as my first 100 days is up, it's time to redouble my efforts to get a job. Fingers crossed.
