Day 139

Because of the heat I didn’t do much today, once the weather gets into the twenties I’m no good for man or goose, it just drains the life outta me. I did a quick foodshop and brought a Kindle.

I had resisted getting a Kindle, but I gave in for three reasons (a) now days there are plenty of Kindle-only books/exclusives, (b) the (relatively) cheap price compared to hard copy books means that I can check out more authors and anthologies (where it’s easier to justify buying them when I only know one or two of the authors) and (c) it saves space.

I loaded up with a fistfull of stories – Jason Arnopp’s Beast In The Basement, Auto Rewind, A Sincere Warning About The Entity In Your Home and American Hoarder, Jon Ronson’s The Amazing Adventures Of Phoenix Jones and The Elephant In The Room, a H.P. Lovecraft omnibus, At The Mountains Of Madness and The Starry Wisdom: Fiction Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.

I read Auto Rewind and American Hoarder. American Hoarder is a creepy story telling how a reality show capturing footage of a poltergeist and is a kinda prologue for The Last Days Of Jack Sparks as it features a character from The Last Days…, while Auto Rewind is a more psychological horror centring on the love of a son for his mother. I don’t want to spoil them, so I won’t say anything more, except that both are really good short stories, are well written and I highly recommend them.

I also watched some episodes of Rick & Morty (the more I watch, the more I like the show and the funnier it gets) and The Captive (about a father trying to find his abducted child, it’s an oddly structured film telling the story in three different time lines – the start of the abduction, six years into the abduction and the child being found eight years later - and his well acted, written and directed, but sometimes it feels like a season of a TV show that has been edited down into a movie) on Netflix.
