Before I did my big food shop for the week I popped into the
local HMV and picked up a copy of Johnny Jewel’s ‘Themes For Television’:
I had recently read a positive review and heard some of the
tracks (or versions of them) used in the third season of Twin Peaks. And the album
is competent, but only the last couple of tracks stuck in my mind, the rest
kinda just floated by and I’ve got no memory of them. Which I guess is a problem
with listening to soundtracks separated from the TV show/film/etc., as most of
the time the soundtrack is there to complement the visual, to highlight the emotion
of the scene, and not to stand out on its own, not to overpower the visual.
I also finished watching season two of Luke Cage, which I
really enjoyed, and thought was an improvement on season one. Possibly because
we’ve already been introduced to the main characters and could get straight into
picking up how they are dealing with their new circumstances – being free and
famous, or a crime lord, or a businessman, etc. We got a good villain, who didn’t
have any ties to our lead character (which is a first for the Marvel Netflix
shows, I think) and had a strong, relatable motive for his actions. The only
part I didn’t like (no spoilers!) was the change in status quo at the end as it
seemed to come out of leftfield and relied on a character getting their revenge
via their will, when there was no way the character could know that they would
die soon (yes, they were in a dangerous situation, but they could have survive
and thrived and the next 30 years, but if they did survive, we wouldn’t get the
change in status quo and the set up for season three!).
And I did the G2 Crossword:
