Aka 29
Jan to 4 Feb
This week I:
1. Had a GP appointment to follow-up on the results from my
ENT appointment, at which the consultant could not find anything wrong with me.
So, at the GP follow-up (which took two and a bit weeks to book!) we agreed
that there was nothing physically wrong with me or causing my symptoms and that
I would try counselling for anxiety. I was given contact details for the local
service and the first step is an online course. We’ll see how it goes.
2. Brought and watched some DVDs – Unforgiven (a great
cowboy film, with a subtext looking at the myth and reality of being a gun
fighter), The Longest Day (a classic old Hollywood telling of D-Day,
highlighting how much luck and pluck played, alongside the planning and
preparation, in pushing the Germans back and starting to liberate Europe), Jay and Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging In Ireland (I’d forgotten how enjoyable it is to listen to Kevin Smith
talk about things and he and Jason Mewes make a great, funny double act) and The Professionals (a great western about experienced fighters rescuing a kidnapped
wife, set as the Old West is being replaced by the modern world). And brought some DVDs that I haven’t watched yet – Mallrats,
A Bridge Too Far, I Am Not A Serial Killer, The Best of Beavis and Butt-Head
and Too Fat For 40.
3. Built a Tie Bomber:
4. Made a 5 Track Playlist to mark the anniversary of Primal
Scream’s album ‘XTMNTR’ being released (this week in 2000):
5. I ordered some great badges from Wicked Critter and they
arrived this week, but I and had to go to the post office to pay £12.78 tax on
them before I could get them, which I hadn’t expected, but they are great
badges and I have ordered some more!
6. Picked up some great comics on New Comic Book Day:
Read some great comics, Kaijumax Season 3 #6 (a great series
and this issue is action and emotion packed), Rick and Morty #34 (a great story
focussing on Krombopulos Michael, showing his backstory and the consequences of
Morty killing him!), Catalyst Prime Kino #3 (an intriguing story about
programming a superhero with fake stories, shades of Miracleman), Justice
League vs Doom Patrol: Milk Wars Part 1 (a slightly surreal and fun start to
the Young Animal and DC crossover), Big Trouble In Little China: Old Man Jack #5
(we’re starting to build to the conclusion of this fun story about the older
Jack Burton as he tries to correct his mistake in sending Earth to Hell), Batgirl
#18 and 19 (Hope Larson is telling great, old-school superhero stories in Batgirl,
by old-school I mean smart and fun stories that aren’t tied into the latest
crossover and don’t require you to have years of continuity knowledge) and Motor
Crush #9 (in which we have an escape and learn a little bit more about Domino
and Crush).
…and ordered Goro #4 (a great series, which to my eyes is kinda
of a cross between Dynasty and The Sopranos).
7. I watched the new Stacey Dooley documentary, Russia's War
on Women, on BBC3 and its shocking to see how bad things are for women in
Russia. Yes, we saw some extremists expressing backward views (i.e. it’s fine
to hit women, it’s natural), but then there’s the Russian state downgrading/removing
laws protecting women/criminalising and penalising men who hit women and
contributing to a society that places women in danger and as second-class
citizens. It was a great, but depressing watch.
8. Brought some music. I picked up a cheap copy of ‘Duelling
Banjo’s – Music from Deliverance’, with the idea to make an edit of ‘Duelling Banjo’s’ (years ago there was a great edit on Youtube which extended it out for
a hypnotic 10 minutes), the Hookworms LP, ‘Microshift’ – a great album which
adds more electronics to the bands psych/shoegazer sound, NME’s Soundtrack to
the Summer CD, as it has a great live version of Slipknot’s ‘Wait and Bleed’,
much better than the album version, and 12” bootleg of Primal Scream’s ‘Rocks’
by ATFC – ATFC don’t change much, but they really ramp up the rockiness and
airs-in-the-airiness
of ‘Rocks’, with vocal and dub versions, a great release.
9. Did the G2 crosswords:
10. Took some photos on my morning walk:
