Days 2106 - 2112

Aka Monday 24th August - Sunday 30th August 2020

Just a quick one as I’m about a month and a half behind (again!)…still working part time from home and part time from the office, and feeling a bit restless, a bit unfocused, so haven’t done much reading or listening to music/podcasts or TV watching…but we did have a BBQ get together which was nice, nice to be with friends doing normal stuff…

…I also got this week’s New Comic Book Day beauties:

…my Modern Toss stickers arrived in the post:

…I watched the original versions of ‘The Lady Vanishes’ and ‘The 39 Steps’, both entertaining mystery films, combining mystery, scares and humour to near perfect effect:

…and on Sunday I played Super Mario Bros 3D World with my nephew…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:

…and Monday’s crossword gets the week off to meh start, as we had to cheat on a sixth of the clues (four out of 23). But it’s the start of the week, so I guess the little grey cells are just warming up for the week. Although I’m not sure that ‘indications of someone’s intentions’ is a good clue for ‘smoke signals’, it just doesn’t jibe with me (man!). Like smoke signals are clear messages, not indications of messages. But, anyhow, we did learn that ‘cordite’ is an ‘explosive compound’ and that ‘Succulents’ are ‘Cacti’, which is nice and kinda makes sense ‘cos they suck up water…

…lots of learning with Tuesday’s crossword as we had to cheat on just over a quarter of the clues (seven out of 25). And a few that we should have gotten, like ’uptake’ from ‘consumption’. And a little annoyed that we went for ‘tent’ for ‘bivouac’ and not the right answer ‘camp’. The little grey cells and me misfired a little, but we learnt that ‘Delhi’ is ‘India’s National Capital Territory’, that a ‘creel’ is a ‘angler’s wicker basket’, that ‘fusillade’ means ‘salvo’ and that ‘Califs’ are the ‘civil and religious leaders of a Muslim country’, but we did have a bit of luck with 9 across, ‘flower of the buttercup family – name one (anag)’, ‘cos the answer, ‘Anemone’ is the title of a Brian Jonestown Massacre song…

…and Wednesday’s crossword goes so much better, the little grey cells blasted through the clues and we just had to cheat on a tenth of the clues (two out of 21). And we learnt that the ‘fine net used in veils’ is called ‘tulle’ and that ‘gavottes’ are ‘old time French dances…

…Thursday’s crossword goes almost as well, we had to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 24), but I’m a little annoyed that we got ‘filth – music genre’ wrong, our first thought was ‘thrash’ metal, like trash, so (a) we spelt it wrong - ‘trash’ and (b) completely forgot about ‘grime’ music <shaking head emoji> and that we went for ‘refugee’ and not ‘evacuee’ for ‘person moved away from a dangerous place’, but those aside, not a bad grid…

…Friday’s crossword goes a tad worse as we had to cheat on almost a fifth of the clues (four out of 18). The little grey cells just were just not clicking today, so we missed some obvious answers – like ‘fault’ for ‘defect’ and ‘knack’ for ‘special way of doing something’. But we did learn that ‘Lyon’ is a ‘city at the confluence of the Saone and Rhone’…

…and the downward spiral continues with Saturday’s crossword as we had to cheat on a third of the clues (six out of 19). The most annoying thing was that for two of them we almost had the right answer – for ‘with a low neckline’ we knew it started with ‘deco…’ but we couldn’t remember the rest and couldn’t get to ‘decollete’ and for ‘member of an ancient Christian church in Egypt’, we knew this was the Coptic Church and were sure that the answer was ‘CopX’, but couldn’t figure out the last letter, we assumed that the ‘…tic’ from ‘Coptic’ replaced the letter, so didn’t get the answer ‘Copt’. Live and learn I guess! But we did learn that ‘arabesque’ is a ‘ballet posture, on one leg’…
