Days 1101 - 1109

Aka Monday 3rd February - Sunday 9th February 2020

This week was pretty much like last week – work, not working, having a little fun – except that this week (although I'm probably leaving a few things out as I'm writing this in March!):

…the postman delivered my copy of ‘Overused’, a compilation of songs and remixes of songs by the band ‘South’…if I remember right South were the first “(indie) band” on Mo’ Wax and their songs were a blend of indie rock ‘n’ roll, mostly with an acoustic bent (way before that became a hacked thing of Ed-alikes), with a sprinkling of trip-hop/downbeat beats. While the remixes are more focused on the trip-hop/downbeat end of the musical spectrum…a great little compilation, which when it ends you want to just go back to the start…

…I did a “love” Tarot spread. A week or two ago, after work, a few of us had some drinks in a local bar and talk turned to relationships/sex. Mainly around how long it’s been and how we should be more proactive and should really put ourselves out there. And that had been floating round my head, so I decided to get some guidance on what to do and did a short tarot spread. I was kinda hoping that it would advise that I do doing, except it said the complete opposite:

CARD
Represents
MEANING
King of Swords
Past
General Meaning and Interpretation (Upright)
In a general context, the King of Swords represents structure, routine, self-discipline, power authority. It is a Minor Arcana card of being methodical, using your head, mind over matter and the head over the heart. This card signifies logic and reason, integrity, ethics and morals. The King of Swords can represent legal matters, law enforcement, military, police and judges. As a person, the King of Swords is a mature male who is cool, self-disciplined, intelligent, honest and strong. He is rational, logical and a deep thinker. He may be an air sign such as Aquarius, Gemini or Libra. He does not like to publicly display his emotions and prefers to use his intellect over his emotions to deal with situations. He is a great conversationalist and fiercely loyal and protective of his loved ones. He does well in structured environments and needs to have a routine to operate at his best. He can be clinical and stern. In the extreme negative, he can be a bully or a tyrant and he can be cold or distant if someone is too irrational for his liking. But generally he is analytical and fair-minded. He takes his responsibilities seriously, is dependable and plays by the rules.

Love & Relationships (Upright)
In a love Tarot reading, if you are in a relationship the King of Swords can indicate that you are in a relationship with someone who embodies the qualities outlined in the above section or you are displaying some of those characteristics yourself in your love life. It can also indicate that you and your partner are connected on an intellectual level as well as a physical and emotional level. It also signifies that your relationship or partner challenges you to excel and maintain high standards. This card can also represent fatherhood so it is a good omen if you are planning a family. If you are single, the King of Swords can indicate that you will meet someone who embodies the qualities outlined in the above section or you are displaying some of those characteristics yourself in your love life. It can also indicate that you need a partner who you can connect with on an intellectual level. It can also represent a man who is happy with his life as a bachelor. If you want a relationship with this man, be aware that he will not settle for a partner who cannot hold his interest or meet his high standards.
The Star
Present
General meaning and interpretation (Upright)
In a general context, The Star indicates hope for the future, inspiration and contentment. With this Major Arcana card in your Tarot spread you will find yourself feeling very positive, motivated and free. You will be feeling very serene and in tune with the universe as The Star is a card of spiritual connection. The Star is a very positive omen. It is the period of calm and stability that follows the storm that was The Tower. The Star indicates that you have come through your tough times with a renewed sense of yourself and the world around you, you are full of calm, well-balanced energy and you are open to healing the wounds of the past. Whatever mental, emotional, physical or spiritual issues you were experiencing are now behind you and you are ready to embrace what your future holds. Trust that the universe has a plan for you and trust the feeling you have that everything is going to be OK.  You will be feeling confident in yourself and people will like you for who you are with this card in your Tarot reading. The Star can also indicate creativity and artistic flair, so now would be a great time to take up an artistic hobby.

Love & Relationships (Upright)
The Star in a love Tarot reading can indicate a relationship with an Aquarius. If you are single, The Star is an indicator that you are ready to let go of any baggage you have been carrying from past relationships. Your future love life looks positive and now is a great time to meet people. It can also signify someone from your past coming back into your life to rekindle a relationship. If you are in a relationship the Star is a sign that your relationship will be progressing into something deeper. If you have had problems in the relationship previously, The Star tells you that these issues can be healed and you can have a bright future if you open yourself up to healing.
Three of Pentangles
Future
General Meaning and Interpretation (Upright)
In a general context, the Three of Pentacles is a positive card to get in a Tarot spread. It represents learning, studying and apprenticeship. It also signifies hard work, determination, dedication and commitment so whatever you are doing at the moment, you are likely to be giving it 100%. It also signifies building on success or foundations. You have worked hard to overcome your challenges and the effort you have put in should be paying off. This Minor Arcana card can also indicate that you may be collaborating with others to achieve your goals.

Love & Relationships (Upright)
In a love Tarot reading, if you are in a relationship, the Three of Pentacles indicates that you are committed to the relationship and are putting the effort in to it to make things work. If you have been having issues in the relationship, it can be a sign that you may seek the help of a relationship counsellor to overcome your issues. You and your partner are growing together and learning about each other. If your relationship is relatively new, the Three of Pentacles can represent a time in the relationship where you are learning all about each other and figuring out how to share your lives with each other. If you are single, the Three of Pentacles can indicate that someone you like has noticed you too. It can also mean that you may meet a potential partner through work or study.
The Lovers
Outcome
General meaning and interpretation (Upright)
The Lovers signifies perfect union, harmony, love and attraction. The Lovers can represent finding the balance within oneself. You are learning to understand yourself, your own personal moral code and what you value in life. This will bring harmony and balance to your life.  In general when The Lovers Tarot card appears it is an indication that you have major choices to make or are faced with a dilemma. You may be feeling uncertain about situations, people in your life or what direction you should take. These are important decisions you are faced with. Don’t automatically go for the easy road, make sure you have all the information and make the right decision. Even if it seems like a difficult path, it will lead you on to greater things.

Love & Relationships (Upright)
In a love or relationship Tarot reading The Lovers is one of the best cards you can get! It is a soulmate card and signifies kindred spirits and an intense bond between two people. If you are single, love is coming your way! This will be more than mere infatuation. There will be an intense attraction and sexual passion as well as romance and a deep connection and mutual understanding. If you are in a relationship, this Major Arcana card tells you to expect a rekindling of the romance in your relationship. The bond between you and your partner will increase and deepen more than you can imagine. The Lovers represent you and your partner having a spiritual, emotional, mental and physical connection that most couples can only dream about. Lucky you!

...with such a positive spread, ending with ‘The Lovers’ as my future. So, I guess I’d better get on with things!!!

…I also popped up to London to meet up with some old friends, have an evening out and to see ‘Parasite’…

...which was a good film, but no where as good as all the hype would have you believe. It’s basically just a story about poor people and rich people and how being poor can push you to do extreme things and how being rich can remove you from the world, so that you forget what things are like for other people and lose a little empathy for those less well off than yourself. It’s well shot, directed, dressed, etc. but it just didn’t touch me or move me. Although I do wonder if it’s because I missed some cultural references that are unique to South Korea society…I also picked up a few CDs (which I haven't listened to yet):

...and a few comics:

…I also had a Long Walk:

…and watched the first episode of the new series of ‘Inside No. 9’, about the referee and linesman at an important football match and what lengths people will go to for love. Not a bad episode, but not in the top tier of ‘Inside No. 9’ episodes…

…and I read:

The Batman’s Grave’ #1 - #4: written by Warren Ellis, pencils by Bryan Hitch, inks by Kevin Nowlan, colours by Alex Sinclair and letters by Richard Starkings. I stopped reading Batman a while ago because the stories were either about Batman as an action hero beating up villains and saving the girl or the stories were revealing a previous unknown secret about Batman’s past. Or both. And it just got boring. It seemed that the writers had forgotten that as well as being at peak physical health Batman is also the World’s Greatest Detective. ‘The Batman’s Grave’ is a great Batman story, because it doesn’t just show Batman as a masked vigilante dishing out violence to criminals, but as a detective as well. Using brain as well as brawn. In these four issues we get to see Batman investigate a normal crime, well normal for Gotham, and fall across a conspiracy against Gotham’s police force (or at least certain members of the force). A conspiracy involving psychological (which has always a useful way of getting at Batman, just ask Dr. Hugh Strange) and making more powerful (if not superpowered) people. Giving Batman physical and psychological threat to tackle. We also get to see the stress that Alfred feels caring for Bruce, especially when putting his life on the line as Batman. 9/10.

John Constantine, Hellblazer#3: written by Simon Spurrier, art by Aaron Campbell, colours by Jordie Bellaire and letters by Aditya Bidikar. John solves, and ends, the mystery of the Peckham angels, with minimum bloodshed, and makes a new friend or at least someone who will drive him about town and the story ends with an ominous ‘friend’ popping to take magical advantage of  the “death” of the Peckham angels. Spurrier does a great job of capturing John’s voice and his ‘fish-out-of-water’-ness when dealing with the modern world and the art team does a great job of capturing the greyness and dullness of London and the magical light of the Peckham angels and the darkness of K-Mag’s world. 8/10.

Dead Eyes#4: written by Gerry Duggan, art by John McCrea, colours by Mike Spicer and letters by Joe Sabino. Martin. And the first arc of Dead Eyes come back is over, with Dead Eyes in the money, Megan making friends, old friends are compensated, and the future looks a little rosier (if not also a little dangerous). ‘Dead Eyes’ is a great crime series, with a little dash of super-heroics, with a very relatable central character and supporting cast, who you want to see triumph and come out on top (or a least okay). 8/10.

…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:

…Monday’s crossword gets us for to a good start for the week, we only had to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 24). With just the minimal amount of chewing over, the little grey cells powered through most of the clues and we learnt that the ‘Naira’ is the ‘Nigerian currency unit’ and that ‘Snowdonia’ is a ‘Welsh national park’ (which I should have at least guessed at)…

…Tuesday’s crossword went even better, we just had to cheat on one twelfth of the clues (two out of 23). Missing out on ‘lucid’ meaning ‘transparently clear’ and learning that ‘delicate ornamental metalwork’ is called ‘filigree’...

…and Wednesday’s crossword goes even better, we just had to cheat on a thirteenth of the clues (two out of 25) and missed what should have been two obvious answers, which probably means that tomorrows or Friday’s or Saturday’s crossword(s) are going to be a nightmare to do. We must be heading towards our iceberg, surely this good run cannot continue!...

…and Thursday’s crossword does go downhill, as we had to cheat on a fifth of the clues (five out of 24). While the little grey cells found most of the clues straight forward, those five we just couldn’t get our head around. We should have gotten ‘cause celebre’ and ‘astound’,  but we did learn that a ‘Earl’s wife’ is called a ‘Countess’, that a ‘person moving sheep’ is a ‘drover’ and that ‘breve’ is a ‘(in music) long note’…

…and Friday’s crossword takes put’s us back on the good foot as we didn’t have to cheat on any of the 22 clues. It was a clean sweep. The gird did take a lot of chewing over, but that time paid off and we managed to get all the answers without cheating at all…

…and Saturday’s crossword ends the week on a pretty good note, we only had to cheat on a ninth of the clues (three out of 26). Again, putting a little extra time in to chew over the tougher clues (mostly) paid off. And we learnt that a ‘stet’ is an ‘editing instruction that matter marked for deletion is to be retained’ and that ‘marquetry’ is ‘inlaid decoration used on furniture’…
