Aka Monday 9th
December 2019 - Sunday 15th December 2019
This week I picked
up these New Comic Book Day beauties:
…read some great
comics:
…and got these two
Bob Dylan albums, ‘John Wesley Harding’ and ‘Nashville Skyline’:
…I’d already got ‘Travellin’ Thru’, which has the outtakes from these albums, and I really liked the
outtakes, so thought I’d give the “proper” albums a try. And they’re not bad,
with a nice mellow, laid-back strumming vibe, with 'Nashville Skyline' edging it, thanks to 'Lay Lady Lay' and 'Girl From The North Country'….
…and I did this week’s
G2 Crosswords:
…and Monday’s crossword gets the week off to a flying start
as I only had to cheat on one twenty-fourth of the clues (one out of 24). The
clues (except for ‘Again (6)’ = ‘afresh’) proved to be no problem for the
little grey cells, as they powered through the clues, throwing out answers like
a ninja throws out shuriken…
…Tuesday’s crossword was a bit of a downer as I had to cheat
on two clues!!! Yep, a whole two out of 21 clues, what is the world coming to 😉
And that’s only because I forgot how to spell ‘rioja’ (for ‘Spanish wine’) and
that ‘stub’ is another word for ‘butt’, both of which seemed so obvious when
revealed. But I did much better than I thought I would when I started, like I
got stuck on ‘sparkling French wine (neither red nor white)’, trying to think
of different types of wine, like it might be ‘pino something’ or ‘rose
something’, but then it just clicked what’s neither red or white, pink of
course and once I had ‘pink champagne’ all the connected clues, and their connected
clues, just fell into place. Plus, Pink Champagne Blitzkrieg should be a band
name asap…
…while Wednesday’s crossword was a wily one to solve and it
went pretty bad, I had to cheat on a fifth of the clues (five out of 23) which
is bad going for current form (but it does give an Illuminati score, so swings
and roundabouts). Some I plain just didn’t know (like ‘Mali’ from ‘West African
country’ and ‘hurdy-gurdy’ from ‘stringed instrument played by turning a
handle), and some I should have gotten (like ‘august’ from ‘dignified’) and
might have got if I’d given them a little more time and chewing over…
…and with Thursday’s crossword the little grey cells gets
things back on track (maybe as a way of distracting me for today’s election,
which I fear is not going to go well) and I only had to cheat on a tenth of the
clues (two out of21). Which meant that I learnt that ‘Doric’ is an
‘architectural style of Ancient Greece’ and was a tad embarrassed to not get
‘pelvis’ from ‘bony structure at the base of the spine’, and me an Elvis fan as
well, tsk, tsk…
…Friday’s crossword provides a brief distraction from the
terrible election results and I only had to cheat on a eleventh of the clues
(two out of 23) (unlike Johnson who had to cheat and lie continuously to get back
into No. 10) And I learnt that ‘Esau’ was ‘Jacob’s twin brother’ and that
‘disallow’ means ‘refuse to accept’ (which seems kinda suitable for today!)…
…and Saturday’s crossword ends the week on a pretty high
note as I only had to cheat on one of the 23 clues. Maybe living under a
proto-fascistic government is good for doing crosswords (or makes crossword
setters to depressed to set hard grids???). Although I not 100% convinced that
‘in perfect health’ is the best clue for ‘very well’, as it makes you think
that it is referring to a specific phrase, like ‘tip-top’ or ‘hale and hearty’.
Anyway, onwards to next week’s crosswords, excelsior…
