Aka Sunday 3rd March 2019
Went for a morning constitutional, aka my long walk, and
managed to walk 9.47km (6.20 miles), in 1 hour 50 minutes and 27 seconds, which
burnt through 1,000 calories and took 12,212 steps…and it’s becoming much
easier to overcome my nemesis, the bridge or rather its height, which makes my
anxious, and then I did some weights when I got home…beef cake!!!
…then I did some prep for next week’s interview and the I read
some comics:
‘Fight Club 3’ #2: where we find out that Balthazar/Tyler
has been recruited by ‘Die Off’ (but who are they? Are they ‘Rize Or Die’ 2.0? And
what do they want?) and the “painting world’ bites back. It still unclear how
the ‘Die Off’ and painting relate to each other and what is going on, but like
I said before it fun to be back in this world and Chuck Palahniuk’s writing
carries you along. While, thanks to Cameron Stewart (art), Dave McCaig (colours)
cand Nate Piekos (letterer), the book looks beautiful. 8/10.
‘Wyrd’ #2: Curt Pires, & Antonio Fuso (storytellers),
Stefano Simeone (colours) and Micah Myers (lettering) (with Rockwell White (script) and
Martoz (art) joining Curt Pires for the backup story) just go all out to tell a
tale of Wyrd taking out a superpowered former UK Prime Minister, called D****
Cameron, who gained his superpower by f****** a pig, while the backup story has
Wyrd taking out a time travelling city heading up a Hunter S Thompson alike. And
we learn a little more of Wyrd’s history. There’s nothing particularly subtle or
new about ‘Wyrd’ #2, but it is a fun, amusing and entertaining comic that takes
you by the scuff of the neck, goes balls out and slams you down at the end of
its 28 pages. 8/10.
‘Redlands’ #11: in issue Jordie Bellaire (writer and
colours), Vanesa R. Del Rey (artist), Clayton Cowles (letterer), Becca Carey (backmatter
designer) and Kevin O’Mara (photographer) gives a lot of history and backstory
for Z and his friend Jake (both in the story and the backmatter), while Alice,
Ro and Father head to the prison. There’s a hot n' humid, languid, ominous feeling to this issue,
with not much seeming to happening on the surface, but you can feel the undercurrents
building to a head with things coming to a head. 8/10.
‘The Wicked & The Divine’ #42: talking of things coming
to a head, there’s plenty of that in Kieron Gillen (writer), Jamie McKelvie
(artist), Matthew Wilson (colourist), Clayton Cowles (letterer) and Dee
Cunniffe (flatter) latest issue of ‘The Wicked & The Divine’, with truths
being revealed, deaths and sacrifices. There’s only a couple of issues left, and
while loose ends are being tied up and we’re learning what is exactly going on,
Mr Gillen still has plenty of room for emotion and character moments/growth, while
the art team are knocking it out of the park. A near perfect comic. 9/10.
‘Peter Cannon Thunderbolt’ #2: in which Kieron Gillen
(writer), Caspar Wungaard (artist), Mary Safro (colourist) and Hassan
Otsmane-Elhaou (letterer) tell a tale of Pete Cannon and friends doing the impossible
and travelling the multiverse to either get revenge on the alternate dimension Peter
Cannon or to stop him from further interfering with their world. This is a fun
superhero comic subtly/gently playing with superhero tropes, with a few odds
and winks to ‘Watchmen’. 7/10.
‘Rick and Morty’ #47: a perfect ‘Rick and Morty’ comic by
Kyle Starks (writer), Puste (illustrator) on the main story and Karla Pacheco
(writer) and CJ Cannon (illustrator) on the backup story, with Sarah Stern (colours)
and Crank! (letters), that feels like they’re taken screenshots from unaired TV
episodes and cut ‘n’ pasted the script on top. 8/10.
…and I listened to excellent, mind-bending King Cannibal Ninja Tune mix CD, ‘The Way Of The Ninja’…in which he mixes together “256 songs and
samples from 20 years of Ninja Tune, Ntone, Big Dada and Counter” (the last
three of which are Ninja Tune sub-labels/off-shoots) it an epic journey Ninja-ness
and leaves you stuck between gob smacked at now King Cannibal has managed to
get 256 tracks onto a mix CD and dancing/shaking your ass. 9.5/10.
