Aka Wednesday 12th September
Awoke from a terrible night’s sleep, I just couldn’t get to sleep,
which wasn’t helped when I started to hear scratching in the wall, afraid that
we may have a mouse/rat/some other rodent problem. FFS.
Still, I was okay to go into London Town for New Comic Book Day,
where I picked up these gems:
…I also brought DVDs of season one of ‘The Good Place’ and ‘Rio Bravo’:
‘The Good Place’ is a great series and I’m looking forward to watching
the extended episodes in this boxset. In ‘Rio Bravo’ John Wayne plays the
sheriff of the small Town of Rio Bravo, which is under siege, because Wayne has
arrested the brother of a local, rich rancher. The rancher plans to break out
his brother before the US Marshalls arrive and Wayne and friends work to
prevent this and to keep themselves alive.
Howard Hawk’s ‘Rio Bravo’ is a classic Hollywood Western film,
where the ‘Duke’ does what he does best, beating the bad guys and being strong
and moral, Dean Martin does the opposite of what he does best (he plays a drunk
who has given up alcohol), Ricky Nelson is an okay actor (and a good singer)
and Angie Dickinson is just great. It’s a joy to watch and the film carries you
through it’s two-hour running time and you don’t get distracted by Wayne’s politics
and that ‘Rio Bravo’ is a rebuke to ‘High Noon’, which neither Wayne (who felt
it was un-American) and Hawks liked.
