Didn’t do much this weekend as I was still feeling off and
anxious, so I mostly pottered about, but I did watch 'Armageddon' and then re-watched
it with the commentary on. The film it self is an ok Hollywood blockbuster,
i.e. it all makes sense until you start to think about it, which Ben Affleck
picks up on in the commentary, noting that surely it’s quicker/easier to teach
astronauts how to drill, rather than teach drillers how to be astronauts and that
when he asked Michael Bay about this he was told to shut up!
Aside from this anecdote,
Michael Bay’s commentary (it seems that everyone on the commentary did their
parts separately and they were stitched together to make the one commentary track)
does make him come across as a bit of a dick, who is more on the commercial rather
than the artistic side of film making. The imdb trivia section also makes
interesting reading as it seems most of the actors did the film for the money
and don’t rate the film itself, e.g. “When asked why he did this film, Steve
Buscemi replied, "I wanted a bigger house".” and “Billy Bob Thornton
has admitted to doing this film for the money and often jokes about acting in
it. He has, however, called it "not THAT bad".”
