On my way to do my weekly food shop, I popped into HMV and brought
two best of’s ‘Bobbie Gentry: I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’ and ‘Muddy Waters:
The Essential Collection’.
‘Muddy Waters: The Essential Collection’ is pretty much what
I expected, cool blues/rock ‘n’ roll songs, many of them classics, that I’d
only heard in covers may other bands – ‘Got My Mojo Working’, ‘Baby, Please Don’t
Go’, ‘Mannish Boy’, etc. There's a reason Muddy Waters is such a big name.
I got ‘Bobbie Gentry: I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’ because
(1) ‘Ode To Billy Joe’ is a stone cold classic, (2) from reading the press
promo for the upcoming Bobbie Gentry I wanted to hear more of her work, and (3)
it was only a couple of quid 😊. And I was blown away, of the 22 tracks at
least 17 are stone cold classics just as good as ‘Ode To Billy Joe’, such as
Mississippi Delta, Fancy, Tobacco Road, Chickasaw County Child, Lookin’ In and
I’ll Never Fall In Love Again. Very tempted to get the boxset now!
I also did the G2 crossword:
