Days 134 -136

Most of Wednesday morning was watching the news about the fire at Grenfell Tower, as shocking as how quickly (and intensely) the fire took hold is the lack of care/duty from builders, management and local and national Government (as discussed in all the media). But the response of the community (and wider public) was amazing. As many other people have said this needs to be investigated, lessons learnt quickly and the guilty need to be punished.

Wednesday was New Comic Book Day:

With lots of good reading:
  • Quick review of The Damned - Damn good blend of noir and supernatural, that is easy to pick up if you haven't read the first storyline.
  • Quick review of The Adventures of Superhero Girl - a realistic take on superheroes, without being 'grim n gritty', lots of fun and heart, e.g. there's worries about rent, realistic family relationships, bad hair days, but plenty of jokes and joys of having superpowers and none of the murders, rapes, etc, associated with the worst of ‘grim n gritty’ comics.
  • Quick review of Accell - a good first issue, setting up the characters and their world and leaving breadcrumbs for future stories.
  • Quick review of Dark Days: The Forge - lots of set up and hooks for future stories, but not much actual story and I felt slightly cheated. I know it's setting up DC's event/crossover, but it felt like all icing/frosting and no cake. I'm sure that it'll read great as the prologue in the TPB, but it isn't a good read as a stand alone comic. All pie crust, no filling!!!
  • Quick review of Supergirl - a great straight ahead superhero story, no angst, just smarts and punching the bad guys :)
  • Quick review of Helena Crash – great fun, which kinda reminds me of early Tank Girl. Realistic characters in a world where anything could happen.

And the postman brought my Mark Thomas ‘Saboteur’ badge

I also brought a couple of DVDs:

The Spy Who Loved Me is a great, slightly tongue in cheek spy adventure fantasy, with some great set pieces – the skiing/Union Jack parachute and the Lotus car/submarine.

I got the Twin Peaks boxset (of seasons 1 and 2) because of all the hype about the new season 3. I haven’t watched any episodes yet, but hopefully it will live up to the hype.

On Thursday, I had one and a half bowling matches (the half was a postal match). We won the match we played live, but lost the postal. I think we lost because we were a little burnt out by the first match and because I had a little vertigo turn, which put me off my stride and made we lose a few frames.

On Friday, I went into London and had a slightly boozy lunch with my old manager (we caught up and did the cryptic crossword – well he did most of it and I chipped in with a few suggestions, which were mostly based on the letters that had been found rather than working out the clues!)

Before lunch I picked up the new Ride album, Weather Diaries from Fopp and got free tote bag!

And after lunch we saw the Wonder Woman film which is pretty good, especially for a DC superhero film!!! I think it works because it keeps things pretty simple. We get WW’s origin, entry of the outside world, WW deciding to leave to help Mankind and WW discovering that the world isn’t black and white, but that you can’t give in to the bad side and defeating the bad guy. The only problem I had was that sometimes I saw Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and not Steve Trevor, and that any second he would teleport out of danger or crash the Enterprise (again!)

Unfortunately, I had a bit of a vertigo episode/panic attack and had to leave the after film drinks early and go home.
