Days 2232 - 2238

Aka Monday 28th December 2020 to Sunday 3rd January 2021

Once again I’ve fallen behind with this blog (maybe it’s a sign, but the hope is that once I’m up to date (again) I can properly utilize this blog, fingers crossed and all that jazz!)and it’s the end of February as I type this, so this’ll be a quick one…not that there is much to say the Tier 4 Lockdown continues and there isn’t much we can do, we the week being either going into the office or working from home, then staying at home when not working, except for going for exercise or food shopping…the days kinda just blur into one monotonous existence…the most dramatic thing that happened this week was that I had a fight with my nephew. My nephew is autistic and had a bad reaction when a Christmas toy didn’t work and he shouted and throw things at me, which upset and it took a few days for him to apologise to me and me to apologise to him. So, we’re back on happy terms, but what really upset me is that no-one else bothered to ask what had happened and if I was hurt or upset. It was very much treated as a normal thing…there just didn’t care…but if they don’t care, fuck ‘em.

Other things that happened this week are that my copy of ‘IND-XED’ arrived:

…and I went for a Long Walk on New Year’s Day:

…and The KLF retuned:

…announcing that they would be re-releasing their music and videos on streaming services (although it's still not re-released for sale!), starting with a greatest hits collection called ‘Solid State Logik 1’, with promises of rarer stuff to come!

I also watching the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films (except ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’). They’re all available for free on Youtube (except ‘The Adventures of…’) and are very enjoyable, if a little dated…and talking of crime stuff I also read Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’s excellent ‘Reckless’, the first in a series of 'Reckless' books:

…if you like great crime drama or just great writing and art then you should be getting all of Brubaker and Phillips work…and the stuff I brought with my Christmas Amazon gift care arrived:

...John Carpenter’s ‘Village of the Damned’, ‘Bad Day At Black Rock’, Jez Conolly’s ‘The Thing’ book (about 'John Carpenter's The Thing') and Turin BrakesThe Optimist: Live’ album. I had to send ‘The Thing’ back as the inner pages were for another book! One about ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ I think. I haven’t watched ‘Village of the Damned’ yet, but ‘Bad Day…’ was a tad disappointing, it’s got a stellar cast, but the story was a little underwhelming and ‘The Optimist: Live’ was a fun listen.

…and I did this week’s G2 Crosswords:

…and Monday’s crossword gets the week off to a solid start. We only had to cheat on an eighth of the clues (three out of 23) and we learnt that an ‘eyot’ is a ‘little lake island’. Slightly annoyed that we didn’t get ‘inviting’ from ‘attractive’ and ‘cement’ from ‘builder’s powder’ (which is ultra-obvious and I’m still not sure how we didn’t get it!)…

…things take a little stumble with Tuesday’s crossword and we had to cheat on a sixth of the clues (four out of 23). I think the little grey cells are feeling a little knackered after Xmas festivities! But we re-learnt that ‘rich soil’ is called ‘loam’ and learnt that a ‘lapidary’ is a gemstone cutter and means elegant and concise and that ‘Melanesia, Micronesia, etc’ are known as ‘Oceania’…

…things pick back up with Wednesday’s crossword as we only had to cheat on two of the 25 clues. The little grey cells powered through the clues like gangbusters, except that we didn’t get ‘emotive’ from ‘inflammatory’ and we learnt that the ‘markka’ was ‘Finland’s pre-1999 currency unit’…

…and things take a great plummet with Thursday’s crossword. The little grey cells must have started their New Year’s Eve celebrations early! And we had to cheat on nearly a third of the clues (six out of 21). Like the clue we didn’t get, things did ‘go down the pan’, but we learnt that ‘Jutland’ was a ‘1916 North Sea naval battle’, that ‘Ostia’ was an ‘ancient port of Rome’ and that a ‘schooner’ is a ‘two- or three-masted square-rigged sailing ship’…

…and things perk up a tad with Friday’s crossword as we only had to cheat on a sixth of the clues (four out of 24). The little grey cells have perked up and we learnt some more geography – that ‘Gascony’ is the ‘region of south-west France between the Bay of Biscay and the Pyrenees’, that ‘Yaoundé’ is ‘Cameroon’s capital’ and that ‘Cyprus’ is a ‘Mediterranean island country’…

…and things are back to normal with Saturday’s crossword, the little grey cells quickly dispatched most of the clues and we only had to cheat on a ninth of them (two out of 18). And we really should have gotten ‘pity’ from ‘shame’ and ‘weirdly’ from ‘in a very odd way’, but not a bad end to the week…
