Days 840 to 846

Aka Monday 20th to Sunday 26th May 2019

And this is my first full week in my new temp job and things are okay pretty well, I feel/think I’m picking things up, no major cock ups or screw ups, and the team have all been friendly and helpful, but there’s just so many little details to remember, to check and to do, but it is feeling more natural, more second nature. Plus, I’m getting paid, which is always nice! Let’s hope this carries on for the next few months…

…I’m also still feeling knackered all the time from my new work routine. Like I said, I’m getting up earlier (partly due to work, but also due to it being Summer and the Summer sun shining through my bedroom window), I’m eating a little, just because I’m out of the house at work and can’t snack like I’m at home, and I’m still (trying to) keeping up my weights routine, so by the time the Friday comes I’m feeling pretty much totally drained. Although my nephew and I did go to the park for some baseball practice, so, aside from walking to and from work, I did get some cardio work in this week! But I am kinda missing my Long Walks, I really should get back to them soon.

…aside from work I did get some great comics (or what I assume are great comics, because I’ve felt too tired to do any reading and have spent my evenings zonked out in front of the TV):

…and the latest Empire, with an 'Avengers: Endgame' special, and Lego Ninjago, for the groovy looking spider-legged baddie, aka 'Daddy No Legs', on the cover:

…also, Rachael Smith’s ‘Stand In Your Power’ arrived and, like Rachael’s other work, it’s an outstanding book.

A very relatable read, with perhaps the most heart wrenching start to a story I’ve read in ages, those first ten pages convey so much angst and despair, that you almost want to put the book down, but if you did you’d miss out on a great story chock full of emotions, jokes, laughs, sadness, fun and general humaneness and a great uplifting ending. And it has great French Flaps!

…and I picked up the new Primal Scream compilation, ‘Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll’, although I’ve got most of them already, it’s (a) nice to have them in one place (and remastered) and (b) to support the band. Although it would be nice to have the more recent singles that have been vinyl only on CD!

…and I watched the new version of ‘Murder On The Orient Express’ and it was…not very good…it looked great, but I never felt like I got to know who the characters were (or were pretending to be) and there were too many “action” scenes, or scenes were Poirot becomes emotional, which felt tacked on to show that this was the modern Poirot and not the Albert Finny or David Suchet 'Poirot', but it just highlighted how the modern film fails to match up to the previous filmed versions…

…and I did the G2 Crosswords this week (as per usual):

Monday’s crossword got the week off to a mediocre start as I had to cheat on almost a fifth of the clues (four out of 25). Maybe because it was the start of the working week and the little grey cells were tired? Slightly annoyed that I went for ‘smooth-tongued’ instead of ‘silver-tongues’, but I did learn that the ‘Larkspur’ is a ‘cultivated plant of the genus Delphinium’…

Tuesday’s crossword went worse, as I had to cheat on nearly a quarter of the clues (five out of 21). Again, I was slightly annoyed that I almost got an answer, I went for ‘longboat’ instead of ‘longship’, ‘Fieldearl’ instead of ‘Fieldfare’ and didn’t get ‘rougher’ from ‘not so gentle’, it’s obvious! But I did learn that there is such a thing as a ‘Harvest Mouse’ and that ‘Umbria’ is a ‘region of central Italy’ and not just a sportswear brand 😊

Wednesday’s wordy puzzle went wonderfully, as I only had to cheat on one clue (out of 24), for some reason I forgot about ‘Macaws’ and therefore didn’t get the answer to ‘long-tailed parrots of Central and South America’, maybe the little grey cells have gotten used to the working week and are firing on all cylinders now…

Thursday’s crossword went even better as I didn’t have to cheat on any clues, I did the crossword after work today and took my time and it paid off (but only in the sense of getting a clean sweep and a mild sense of pride, it did not pay off in any other sense 😊)…

Friday’s crossword dipped down a little bit and I had to cheat on nearly a sixth of the clues (three out of 19) and two of those cheats I shouldn’t have had to do – I should have gotten ‘platform’ from ‘supporting structure’ and ‘zone’ from ‘distinctive area’, but I did learn that ‘Rhodes’ is the ‘largest island of the Dodecanese’. I think that the little grey cells are knackered at the end of the working week and just couldn’t back all the connections to get the answers…

Saturday’s crossword, on the first day of rest of the weekend, with the little grey cells recharged and bounced back, so I only had to cheat on one of the 24 clues. The clue was ‘short’ and I went for ‘stiff’, as in too short a bill, bar tab or some other charge, went the answer was ‘brief’ and I should have been thinking off ‘short’ as in small, concise and limited amount…ah well, bring on next week’s crosswords…
